BECAUSE OF HIS BELIEF IN THE INNOCENCE OF HIS CLIENTS, THE GOOD LAWYER WORKS HARD TO GET HIS CLIENTS OFF.  TIME AFTER TIME, HE IS SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED – ONE VICTIM COMMITS SUICIDE RIGHT BEFORE HIS EYES AFTER GETTING HIS CLIENT OFF.   ANOTHER KEEPS HIS FAILED LIE DETECTOR TEST AND CONFESSION FROM BECOMING PUBLIC UNTIL AFTER HE CRIES IN FRONT OF THE JURY PROTESTING HIS INNOCENCE AND HAVING ALL CHARGES AGAINST HIM DISMISSED.  THEN MORE PEOPLE WHO TESTIFIED AGAINST HIM ARE MURDERED AND THE RESULT OF THE LIE DETECTOR TEST ARE REVEALED.  THE GOOD LAWYER TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS BRINGING HIS MAFIA FAMILY IN TO GET JUSTICE WHEN THE LEGAL SYSTEM HE UPHOLDS FAILS.   NOT AS GOOD AS A JOHN GRISHAM BOOK BUT STILL GOOD!

PUBLISHER’S BLURB:

INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY.
A young, ambitious lawyer is eager to prove he is better than the mobster dominated family he grew up in. Working as a Bronx Legal Aid Attorney he learns how to twist the system, how to become an unbeatable defense lawyer. But it’s 1982. The Spiderman rapist is on the loose and New York City is a city in fear. When an outraged victim commits suicide right before his eyes, searching for absolution and determined to prove his client’s innocence, he knocks the pegs out from under the prosecution’s case. Digging deeper, horrifying revelations about his family’s past collide with the true identity of the sadistic sociopath behind the real Spiderman’s rampage. In the process, this good lawyer comes face-to-face with his greatest conflict and deepest fear: to win, really win, must he sacrifice every principle he believes in and embrace his family’s mafia past to become judge, jury, and executioner?

IRON LAKE

IRON LAKE IS THE FIRST OF 14 MYSTERIES FEATURING CORK O’CONNOR.  THE MURDERS START PILING UP ALL AROUND THE TOWN OR AURORA AND CORK SEEMS TO FIND EACH ONE.  THE TOWN IS ALSO DIVIDED BETWEEN WHITES AND INDIAN CULTURE.  THE INDIANS KNOW THAT “WHITE JUSTICE” IS FULL OFF CORRUPTION AND SCANDAL.  CORK IS PART INDIAN AND IS NO LONGER SHERIFF OF THE TOWN SO THEY WORK TOGETHER TO UNCOVER THE SCANDAL THAT IS TAKING OVER THE TOWN.  BEWARE OF THE WINDIGO WHO WHISPERS YOUR NAME!

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

William Kent Krueger joined the ranks of today’s best suspense novelists with this thrilling, universally acclaimed debut. Conjuring “a sense of place he’s plainly honed firsthand in below-zero prairie” (Kirkus Reviews), Krueger brilliantly evokes northern Minnesota’s lake country — and reveals the dark side of its snow-covered landscape.
Part Irish, part Anishinaabe Indian, Corcoran “Cork” O’Connor is the former sheriff of Aurora, Minnesota. Embittered by his “former” status, and the marital meltdown that has separated him from his children, Cork gets by on heavy doses of caffeine, nicotine, and guilt. Once a cop on Chicago’s South Side, there’s not much that can shock him. But when the town’s judge is brutally murdered, and a young Eagle Scout is reported missing, Cork takes on a mind-jolting case of conspiracy, corruption, and scandal.
As a lakeside blizzard buries Aurora, Cork must dig out the truth among town officials who seem dead-set on stopping his investigation in its tracks. But even Cork freezes up when faced with the harshest enemy of all: a small-town secret that hits painfully close to home.

IRREPARABLE HARM

Product Details

Don’t mess with Sasha McCandless!  Not only is she a force in the courtroom, but her 5 ft. 100 pound body can bring down the toughest thug using Krav Maga – never heard of it before but it was developed by the Israeli Army in 1940 and is quite lethal.  Unfortunately I read Irreparable Harm following the recent plane crash by a Germanwings co-pilot into the French Alps.  While it was technology that brought the plane to crash into a mountain in Irreparable Harm, it was just too similar and raw for me.  Yet the story was about much more than the crash so it was, indeed, a good read.  I have not committed to reading any more in the series just yet but I would like to learn Krav Maga.

PUBLISHER’S BLURB:

Meet attorney Sasha McCandless in Irreparable Harm, the fast-paced, whip-smart legal thriller by USA TODAY Bestselling Author Melissa F. Miller.

After eight long years, Sasha is about to make partner at a prestigious law firm. All she has to do is keep her head down and her billable hours up.

When a plane operated by her client slams into the side of a mountain, killing everyone aboard, Sasha gears up to defend the inevitable civil lawsuits. She soon realizes the crash was no accident: a developer has created an application that can control a commercial plane’s onboard computer from a smartphone.

Sasha joins forces with a federal air marshal, and they race to prevent another airline disaster. But when people close to the matter start turning up dead, Sasha must rely on both her legal skills and her Krav Maga training to stop the madman before he kills her.

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer’s career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track—until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the “lucky” associates. She’s offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she’d get her old job back.

In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about. Mattie Wyatt, lifelong Brady resident and head of the town’s legal aid clinic, is there to teach her how to “help real people with real problems.” For the first time in her career, Samantha prepares a lawsuit, sees the inside of an actual courtroom, gets scolded by a judge, and receives threats from locals who aren’t so thrilled to have a big-city lawyer in town. And she learns that Brady, like most small towns, harbors some big secrets.

Her new job takes Samantha into the murky and dangerous world of coal mining, where laws are often broken, rules are ignored, regulations are flouted, communities are divided, and the land itself is under attack from Big Coal. Violence is always just around the corner, and within weeks Samantha finds herself engulfed in litigation that turns deadly.
