GRACE IS A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR WHO REMINDS ME A BIT OF KINSEY MALONE IN  SUE GRAFTON’S NOVELS.  GRACE IS NOT VERY GOOD AT DISGUISING HERSELF OR TAILING OTHERS AND SHE GETS HERSELF INTO SOME TIGHT SPOTS BUT SHE HAS A TOUGH GUY FOR WHEN THE GOING GETS ROUGH.  PERHAPS HER MOST CHALLENGING CASE IS SEARCHING FOR THE IDENTITY OF HER TRUE MOTHER AND FATHER WHOM SHE BELIEVED WERE KILLED IN AN ACCIDENT.  GRACE MEETS SEVERAL CHARACTERS (MINNIE, TYMON, ELMER, FERN, ESSIE) ALONG THE WAY AND EACH REVEALS A BIT MORE ABOUT HER PARENTS.  THE TRUTH IS SHOCKING AND A BIT FAR-FETCHED BUT IT IS A FUN READ.

PUBLISHER’S BLURB:

Things that happen to you in the past can mold you into someone you’re not.

In her search for the truth, Grace encounters people whose actions cause her to be distrustful of just about everyone, making her mission that much more difficult but heightening her determination to uncover what she believes is essential for her to go on with her life.

UNFORGETTABLE: SHORT STORIES

UNFORGETTABLE

I RECENTLY WENT THROUGH SIMILAR EVENTS IN MY LIFE AND IT BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES – NOT ALL GOOD!  IT WAS AN EASY, WORTHWHILE READ!
WHAT THE PUBLISHER SAYS:
The nine stories in UNFORGETTABLE: SHORT STORIES are about the presence of the past, the power of memory, and the enduring nature of love. They follow Miriam Batson, the protagonist of Paulette Alden’s earlier short story collection, FEEDING THE EAGLES, into middle age, as she navigates the suicide attempt of one of her college students; the death of a beloved maid from her Southern childhood; the shock and anger of a job rejection possibly due to sex discrimination; and the sudden death of her father. Five of the stories track Miriam’s efforts to stave off putting her mother in a nursing home, as her mother succumbs to Alzheimer’s. Anyone who has experienced such a situation will relate to the poignancy, guilt, and sometimes painful humor involved in caring for a failing parent.

SUMMER OF FIREFLY MEMORIES

SUMMER OF FIREFLY MEMORIES

SUMMER OF FIREFLY MEMORIES IS A FUN AND EASY READ.  SAMANTHA REUNITES WITH HER THREE SISTERS FOR THE SUMMER IN THE SAME RESORT THEIR FAMILY USED TO GO TO WHEN THEY WERE KIDS.  IT IS TWENTY YEARS AFTER THEIR PARENT’S TRAGIC ACCIDENT BUT EACH HAS BEEN CHANGED BY THIS HORRIFIC EVENT.  MUCH DRAMA UNFOLDS AS THE SISTERS TRY TO COME TO TERMS WITH THE ACCIDENT, WITH THEIR LIFE CHOICES AND EACH OTHER.  THE SISTERS AND SMALL TOWN FOLK SHARE FLASHES FROM THE PAST (FIREFLY MEMORIES) OF THEIR SUMMERS AT THE LAKE.  THERE IS SOME ROMANCE BUT IT IS NOT SYRUPY AND THE VACATION ENDS WITH NEW BEGINNINGS FOR ALL!  IT IS NOT DEEP BUT IT IS FUN – A GREAT SUMMER READ!

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

Imagine spending an entire summer in a cabin on a lake – simply because you can.

That’s exactly what Samantha McGreggor, a thirtysomething eco-journalist, does in SUMMER OF FIREFLY MEMORIES. She trades Arizona’s summer heat for Minnesota’s cool lake breezes by spending her summer at the same resort her family used to go to when she was young.

Her summer agenda – relaxation, beach reads, soul-searching, bonding with her three grown sisters.

Her concerns – she and her sisters haven’t been back to the resort since their parents’ death twenty years ago when they were all practically teenagers, and, well, they tend to act like emotional teenagers when they’re all together.

Her summer reality – fun in the sun, secrets, sibling rivalries, lost memories, new love, hope.

LANDLINE

LANDLINE

I THINK I WAS EXPECTING A SUPER GREAT STORY SINCE LANDLINE WAS THE GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER FOR BEST FICTION IN 2014.  IT REALLY LET ME DOWN.  IT WAS AN EASY READ AND FUN ENOUGH BUT THE PLOT WAS SUPERFICIAL – A MARRIAGE IN TROUBLE, WORK OBLIGATIONS THAT GET IN THE WAY OF CHRISTMAS WITH FAMILY AND TOTAL LACK OF COMMUNICATION:  UNLESS YOU USE THE LANDLINE.  IF IT WERE A MAN WHO WAS MISSING CHRISTMAS WITH THE FAMILY THERE WOULD BE NO PLOT AT ALL.  BUT GEORGIE IS THE BREADWINNER IN THE FAMILY AND THINGS ARE GETTING EXCITING IN HER CAREER.  NEAL IS REALLY MORE AT FAULT FOR NOT SUPPORTING GEORGIE’S LIFE CHOICES, FOR NOT ANSWERING GEORGIE’S CALLS AND FOR JUST BEING A MAN!  OF COURSE, IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK AND GEORGIE MAKES THE SACRIFICES SHE NEEDS TO.  A “CHICK FLICK” OF A BOOK.

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

A New York Times Best Seller! Goodreads Choice Award Winner for Best Fiction of 2014! An Indie Next Pick!
From New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park and Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell, comes a hilarious, heart-wrenching take on love, marriage, and magic phones.

Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply—but that almost seems beside the point now.
Maybe that was always beside the point.
Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her—Neal is always a little upset with Georgie—but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go without her.
When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.
That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. . . .
Is that what she’s supposed to do?
Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

THE GREATEST GIFT

THE GREATEST GIFT

A ROMANCE THAT I ACTUALLY LIKED!  WELL, IT WASN’T ALL ABOUT THE ROMANCE AND THE WEDDING AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  SETH AND TRISTA BOTH HAVE COMPLICATED PASTS, THE PRESENT PRESENTS VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEMS, BUT THE FUTURE BEGINS TO LOOK BRIGHTER.

I ALSO READ LOSING FAITH (THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SETH AND TRISTA SERIES) A FEW YEARS BACK AND REALLY ENJOYED THAT.

PUBLISHER’S SYNOPSIS:

Never has Seth Storm’s life been this complete. His daughter, Faith, is now safely in his custody and care. And his career as a famous country musician is finally back on track. The only thing left for him to do is marry Trista Tilman, the woman who has stood by his side during the darkest moments of his life. After a beautiful lakeside proposal, Seth believes that his life is whole. That is, until he receives a call that threatens to destroy the foundation he has worked so hard to build.

Trista hasn’t always been lucky in love, but after meeting Seth, she knows he’s the right man for her and her daughter, Savannah. Strong and talented, he loves her the way she hasn’t been loved in a very long time. During a time when she had no one, he stepped in and helped her get back on her feet. And when he gets down on one knee, she knows that her life will never be the same. Little does she know that their largest battle has yet to come.

Nothing can prepare a parent for the journey Seth and Trista are about to embark upon as they face a road with unpredictable twists that will test them in ways they have never been tested, causing them to do things they never thought they would do.

The Greatest Gift is an emotional story about two people who believe they’ve finally found the peace they’ve been searching for only to discover that life has other plans for them.

The Greatest Gift is the second book in the Seth & Trista series, following Losing Faith and preceding The Final Encore. The Greatest Gift is Asher’s sixth novel. He is also the author of Insignificant Moments, Across the Creek, Beneath the Willow, and Close to Home.

About the Author

Raised in New Haven, Indiana, Jeremy Asher spent most of his childhood reading books, watching movies, and daydreaming. PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

After she’s diagnosed with breast cancer, forty-nine-year old Tess sets forth on a mission to complete her TO-DO List before, what she’s sure is, her impending death. She needs to make peace with her estranged sister, Birdie, scatter her mother’s long-kept ashes, rescue her daughter, Haddie, from the grip of an eating disorder, guide her teenage son, Henry, through a bumpy adolescence, and reignite the spark in her almost thirty-year marriage to her husband, Will.

Tess is aided on her quest by narrator, Grace, who lends the story its most brilliant elements: subtle magical realism and deep psychological complexity. Is Grace an imaginary friend, guardian angel, or a part of Tess that knows better than she? The Resurrection of Tess Blessing is by turns poignant, gritty, spiritually uplifting, and hilarious as hell.

Lesley Kagen has created an unforgettable, redemptive story about a middle-aged woman with the odds stacked against her, who discovers that in the end, love really does conquer all.

SOMEONE LIKE YOU

SOMEONE LIKE YOU

SOMEONE LIKE YOU WAS A NICE STORY WITH SOME ROMANCE BUT NOT TOO SAPPY.  IT OPENS YOUR EYES TO THE FACT THAT THE PEOPLE WITH WHOM YOU ASSOCIATE DEFINITELY HELP SHAPE YOUR LIFE AND CAN MAKE YOU STRONGER OR BREAK YOU.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE:

Life gets in the way as upstate NY sisters, Marley and Abigail cling to each other and their young children. But a babysitter introduces them both to Jay Malik, a medical student from India who becomes their lifeline to happiness, forgiveness and healing. “Another tear-jerker from Jenkins. Have the tissue ready.”
