HEART AND SOUL

THIS IS A VERY QUAINT TALE TOLD IN MAEVE BINCHY STYLE WHERE YOU JUST GROW TO LOVE THE CHARACTERS (OR LOATHE THEM)!  EVERYONE IS SEARCHING FOR HAPPINESS AND MANY FIND IT PERHAPS NOT IN THE PLACES YOU WOULD EXPECT.

THE STORIES REVOLVE AROUND THE HEART CLINIC THAT THRIVES IN A COMMUNITY IN IRELAND.  IT IS ABOUT THE DOCTOR WHO RUNS THE CLINIC AND THE PEERS SHE WORKS WITH, THE PATIENTS WHO ARE LEARNING TO LIVE WITH HEART DISEASE, AND EVEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS LIKE THE PREACHER AND THE PHARMACIST.  MY FAVORITE IS ANIA, WHO IS A YOUNG POLISH GIRL WHO IS SO EXCITED TO HAVE A JOB AT THE CLINIC SO SHE CAN SEND MONEY BACK TO HER MOTHER IN POLAND.  SHE WORKS MANY OTHER JOBS ABOUT TOWN TO EARN AS MUCH AS SHE CAN.  BECAUSE SHE DOES MANY MENIAL JOBS, ANIA IS DEEMED UNWORTHY OF THE SON OF ONE OF THE HEART PATIENTS PARENTS.  OF COURSE THE SON IS SMITTEN WITH ANIA – YOU WILL BE TOO.

THE STORY IS INNOCENT, ROMANTIC, FUN AND HEART WARMING!

JACKET BLURB:

With the insight, humor, and compassion we have come to expect from her, Maeve Binchy tells a story of family, friends, patients, and staff who are part of a heart clinic in a community caught between the old and the new Ireland.

Dr. Clara Casey has been offered the thankless job of establishing the underfunded clinic and agrees to take it on for a year. She has plenty on her plate already–two difficult adult daughters and the unwanted attentions of her ex-husband–but she assembles a wonderfully diverse staff devoted to helping their demanding, often difficult patients.

Before long the clinic is established as an essential part of the community, and Clara must decide whether or not to leave a place where lives are saved, courage is rewarded, and humor and optimism triumph over greed and self-pity.

Heart and Soul is Maeve Binchy at her storytelling best.

The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it’s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life. SILVER BAY

Cover of Silver Bay

WELL THEY SAID THIS WAS A ROMANCE, WHICH IT WAS BUT THERE IS SUCH A GREAT STORY IN THIS ROMANCE THAT I LOVED ITI GREW UP IN A PLACE CALLED SILVER BAY BUT IT WAS ON LAKE ERIE IN CANADA ABOUT 20 MILES NORTH OF BUFFALO.  IT REMAINS THE SAME ALTHOUGH THERE HAS BEEN SOME BIG DEVELOPMENT IN SHERKSTON WHICH ONCE WAS A CAMP GROUND.  IT IS NOW A CITY OF MOBILE HOMES WITH A WATER PARK.  THAT HAS TAKEN AWAY FROM THE AMBIANCE.

THIS STORY REVOLVES AROUND A DEVELOPER WANTING TO CREATE A HUGE RESORT AND WATER PARK IN SILVER BAY TO MAKE BIG MONEY AND FORGET ABOUT THE AMBIANCE WITH DOLPHIN AND WHALE WATCHING EXCURSIONS.  IT IS ALL ABOUT BIG MONEY BUT THE DEVELOPER HIMSELF FALLS IN LOVE WITH SILVER BAY AND ITS INHABITANTS WHO HAVE LIVED FOR YEARS IN THIS UNSPOILED REGION.  HE WILL NOT PUSH FORWARD AND RUIN THE SERENITY.
HIS REASONS FOR STOPPING THE DEVELOPMENT WILL SURPRISE YOU BUT WHY THE DEVELOPMENT ACTUALLY STOPS IS ANOTHER STORY.

 PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You and One Plus One, in an earlier work available in the U.S. for the first time, a surprising and moving romance set in an old-fashioned seaside town on the verge of unwelcome change

Liza McCullen will never fully escape her past. But the unspoiled beaches and tight-knit community of Silver Bay offer the freedom and safety she craves—if not for herself, then for her young daughter, Hannah. That is, until Mike Dormer arrives as a guest in her aunt’s hotel.
The mild-mannered Englishman with his too-smart clothes and distracting eyes could destroy everything Liza has worked so hard to protect: not only the family business and the bay that harbors her beloved whales, but also her conviction that she will never love—never deserve to love—again.
For his part, Mike Dormer is expecting just another business deal—an easy job kick-starting a resort in a small seaside town ripe for development. But he finds that he doesn’t quite know what to make of the eccentric inhabitants of the ramshackle Silver Bay Hotel, especially not enigmatic Liza McCullen, and their claim to the surrounding waters.
As the development begins to take on a momentum of its own, Mike’s and Liza’s worlds collide in this hugely affecting and irresistible tale full of Jojo Moyes’s signature humor and generosity.

THE BOOK THIEF

Cover of The Book Thief

I TRULY ENJOYED THE BOOK THIEF.  TOLD BY THE GRIM REAPER WHOSE JOB IT IS TO CARRY SOULS OUT OF THIS WORLD.  HE IS VERY BUSY IN NAZI GERMANY

THE BOOK THIEF IS JUST A GIRL NAMED LIESEL WHO IS GROWING UP IN NAZI GERMANY IN 1939.  HER FATHER WAS A COMMUNIST, ALTHOUGH SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.  HER MOTHER CAN NO LONGER CARE FOR HER CHILDREN (OR IT IS TOO DANGEROUS TO KEEP THEM). SHE  HAS DECIDED TO PLACE THEM IN FOSTER CARE.  IN THE TRAIN ON THE WAY TO THE FOSTER HOME,  LIESEL’S BROTHER DIES.  IT IS AT HIS FUNERAL THAT LIESEL STEALS HER FIRST BOOK.

LIESEL’S NEW HOME TAKES SOME ADJUSTMENT – HER FOSTER MOTHER IS DIFFICULT AND SWEARS AT HER BUT HER FOSTER FATHER BONDS WITH LIESEL WHILE SOOTHING HER FROM RECURRENT NIGHTMARES.  HE TEACHES HER TO READ AND PLAYS THE ACCORDIAN FOR HER.  LIESEL REALLY DOESN’T KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING DURING THE WAR – SHE DOES NO KNOW WHAT HITLER STANDS FOR, WHY HER MOTHER NEVER RETURNS THE LETTERS SHE WRITES SO PAINSTAKINGLY, WHY THEY ARE HARBORING A JEW IN THEIR BASEMENT AND CANNOT TELL ANYONE, WHY THOUSANDS OF JEWS ARE MARCHED PAST THEIR HOME GOING TO A CAMP WHERE THEY WILL CONCENTRATE.

BY THE TIME THE BOMBINGS ON GERMANY BEGIN TO ESCALATE, LIESEL HAS DISCOVERED WHO “THEY” ARE AND THAT THEY LIKELY KILLED HER PARENTS AND JEWISH FRIEND FROM THE BASEMENT.  YET SHE IS TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND THE REAL DANGER THAT IS LURKING.

HIMMEL STREET IS BOMBED WITH NO AIR RAID WARNINGTHE DEVASTATION IS COMPLETE…

WHAT THE PUBLISHER HAS TO SAY:

The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak’s unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

 PUBLISHER’S  NOTES:

“Funny as Hell, with a Heart as Big as Texas”The Dirty Parts of the Bible is a humorous adventure across America during the Great Depression—a rollicking tale of love and liquor, preachers and prostitutes, trains and treasure, sure to appeal to fans of Water for Elephants, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Mark Twain, and Johnny Cash.Semifinalist for the Amazon Breakthrough Novel AwardPublishers Weekly says:

“While the title suggests a raunchy read, this rich and soulful novel is actually a rather well-done bildungsroman [coming-of-age story] steeped in wanderlust and whimsy that at times recalls The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and at others a tamer On the Road. The story begins in 1936 as 19-year-old Tobias is thumbing his way from Remus, Mich., to his uncle’s farm in Glen Rose, Tex., to find a hidden bag of money, after his father, a Baptist pastor, drunkenly slams his car into the church and is removed from the parsonage. The author does an excellent job in making well-charted territory (riding the rails; scavenged campfire meals under the stars) seem vibrant and new. Snippets of scripture, Southern spirituals, and folk ballads lend context and flavor to the text. Most impressive are the jangly dialogue and the characters’ distinctive voices, which are authentic and earthy but not remotely hoary. When Tobias finally arrives at his uncle’s, the surprises that await him are more than enough to keep his–and readers’–interests piqued.” (Review from the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award)

The Dirty Parts of the Bible has it all … a plot that brings lots of laughs and a few tears, a writing style that is comfortable and matches the story, and characters that are pure joy.” Front Street Reviews

The Dirty Parts of the Bible is a grown-up Mark Twain-type adventure with lots of spirit and humor.” –Reader Views

“A fun read.” –The Nashville Scene
