LET IT BE

LET IT BE

LET IT BE WAS A QUICK READ ABOUT THE FLIGHT FROM AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP, BEGINNING TO TRUST AGAIN, BETRAYAL OF A LOVED ONE THAT LEAD TO HEIGHTENED VIOLENCE.  IT IS A GOOD STORY WITH A STRONG PLOT AND THE BACKGROUND BEATLES THEME BRINGS IT ALL TOGETHER.  ENJOY THE READ!

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

Let It Be is a touching tale of loss, longing, and forgiveness that chronicles the breakup of a marriage, the destruction of a family, and the struggle to come together in the aftermath of what remains.

Searching for the love and happiness she feels she deserves, Michelle Jansen leaves her abusive, overbearing husband behind and takes her two kids to Amarillo, Texas, where she begins to learn how to stand on her own two feet, supporting herself and her children with the money she earns from a low-paying job as she becomes increasingly involved with a coworker who is an even bigger fan of the Beatles than she is.

But Michelle doesn’t realize that her ex-husband is willing to do whatever he can to destroy her new life. When Michelle is betrayed by her very own son, this already fractured family will be damaged in an almost unimaginable way. Can they find forgiveness in the midst of so much sorrow and guilt, or will love give them the strength that they need to let it be?

Part family saga, part coming of age tale, Let It Be is a story intimately linked to the music of the Beatles, a debut novel filled with true-to-life characters who want nothing more than a second chance.

EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE

EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE

I READ A BOOK REVIEW ON A BLOG ON WORDPRESS FOR THIS BOOK.  THE BLOGGER CRIED THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK BUT I FOUND IT RATHER UPLIFTING!  YES, OSKAR SCHELL LOST HIS FATHER ON 9/11 IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER BUT THE BOOK DOESN’T FOCUS ON THIS LOSS.  THE FOCUS IS MORE ABOUT HOW PEOPLE HAVE MOVED ON, HOW PEOPLE ARE SURVIVING, HOW THEY FIND WAYS TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE DAYS FOLLOWING THE TRAGEDY.  OSKAR ACCIDENTALLY FINDS A KEY WHEN HE BREAKS A VASE FOUND ON THE VERY TOP SHELF OF HIS FATHER’S CLOSET.  OSKAR’S FATHER ALWAYS CHALLENGED OSKAR WITH “TREASURE” HUNTS USING CLUES SO OSKAR DECIDES THE KEY IS A CLUE AND HE MUST FIND THE LOCK THAT FITS THE KEY!

OSKAR IS A STRANGE 9 YEAR OLD – HE SEEMS HIGHLY INTELLIGENT BUT HE IS ALSO NAIVE IN MANY WAYS AND HAS MANY QUIRKS AND PHOBIAS.  I WONDERED THROUGHOUT THE BOOK IF HE MAY HAVE ASPERGER’S  SYNDROME BUT THIS TOPIC NEVER CAME UP.  HIS HUNT FOR THE LOCK TAKES HIM ON MANY ADVENTURES THROUGH THE 5 BOROUGHS OF NEW YORK.  ALONG THE WAY HE MEETS MANY CHARACTERS – SOME STRANGE, SOME SAD, SOME WHO DON’T GIVE HIM THE TIME OF DAY.

I LOVE HOW THE AUTHOR WOVE THIS STORY OF LOVE AND LOSS!  I LOVE HOW THOSE IN OSKAR’S FAMILY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH THAT THEIR LIFE CHOICES ARE FOCUSED ON PROTECTING EACH OTHER AND UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER’S NEED TO DEAL WITH THEIR LOSS IN THEIR OWN WAYI HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS READ!

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history. What he discovers is solace in that most human quality, imagination.
Meet Oskar Schell, an inventor, Francophile, tambourine player, Shakespearean actor, jeweler, pacifist, correspondent with Stephen Hawking and Ringo Starr. He is nine years old. And he is on an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. His mission is to find the lock that fits a mysterious key belonging to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11.
An inspired innocent, Oskar is alternately endearing, exasperating, and hilarious as he careens from Central Park to Coney Island to Harlem on his search. Along the way he is always dreaming up inventions to keep those he loves safe from harm. What about a birdseed shirt to let you fly away? What if you could actually hear everyone’s heartbeat? His goal is hopeful, but the past speaks a loud warning in stories of those who’ve lost loved ones before. As Oskar roams New York, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity who are all survivors in their own way. He befriends a 103-year-old war reporter, a tour guide who never leaves the Empire State Building, and lovers enraptured or scorned. Ultimately, Oskar ends his journey where it began, at his father’s grave. But now he is accompanied by the silent stranger who has been renting the spare room of his grandmother’s apartment. They are there to dig up his father’s empty coffin.

THE SILKWORM

THE SILKWORM

GREAT WHO-DUN-IT WITH GALBRAITH ALWAYS KEEPING YOU GUESSING.  YOU WILL NEVER GUESS WHO THE MURDERER IS NOR THE MOTIVE UNTIL GALBRAITH UNFOLDS IT ALL FOR YOU.   WELL WRITTEN AND EXCITING!  ALSO READ THE CUCKOO’S CALLING AND IT WAS GREAT TOO!

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

Private investigator Cormoran Strike returns in a new mystery from Robert Galbraith, author of the #1 international bestseller The Cuckoo’s Calling.

When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days—as he has done before—and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home.

But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine’s disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were to be published, it would ruin lives—meaning that there are a lot of people who might want him silenced.

When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any Strike has encountered before…

A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, THE SILKWORM is the second in the highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant, Robin Ellacott.

FROM THE WRECKAGE

FROM THE WRECKAGE

WOW!  THIS WAS NOT AT ALL WHAT I EXPECTED.  FROM THE PUBLISHER’S SYNOPSIS THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL THAT THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT A HORRIFIC CAR ACCIDENT.  AND I DEFINITELY WASN’T EXPECTING SO MUCH ABOUT YOUNG LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS.  I ENJOYED THE BOOK BUT THE STORY COULD HAVE HAD A LITTLE MORE MEAT TO IT.

PUBLISHER’S SYNOPSIS:

“In a matter of minutes on a Friday night, I lost my school, my identity, the security of my first love, the personality of my sweet fearless brother, my best friend, my town, everything as I knew it. Everything changed.”

“Minutes – that’s all it takes to change your entire life. How do you deal with that?”

For high school senior Jules Blacklin surviving the storm is only the beginning. Faced with the new reality of her life, she must find a way to rise From The Wreckage and answer the question – how do you get back to normal, when everything that was normal is gone?

LANDLINE

LANDLINE

I THINK I WAS EXPECTING A SUPER GREAT STORY SINCE LANDLINE WAS THE GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER FOR BEST FICTION IN 2014.  IT REALLY LET ME DOWN.  IT WAS AN EASY READ AND FUN ENOUGH BUT THE PLOT WAS SUPERFICIAL – A MARRIAGE IN TROUBLE, WORK OBLIGATIONS THAT GET IN THE WAY OF CHRISTMAS WITH FAMILY AND TOTAL LACK OF COMMUNICATION:  UNLESS YOU USE THE LANDLINE.  IF IT WERE A MAN WHO WAS MISSING CHRISTMAS WITH THE FAMILY THERE WOULD BE NO PLOT AT ALL.  BUT GEORGIE IS THE BREADWINNER IN THE FAMILY AND THINGS ARE GETTING EXCITING IN HER CAREER.  NEAL IS REALLY MORE AT FAULT FOR NOT SUPPORTING GEORGIE’S LIFE CHOICES, FOR NOT ANSWERING GEORGIE’S CALLS AND FOR JUST BEING A MAN!  OF COURSE, IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK AND GEORGIE MAKES THE SACRIFICES SHE NEEDS TO.  A “CHICK FLICK” OF A BOOK.

PUBLISHER’S EXCERPT:

A New York Times Best Seller! Goodreads Choice Award Winner for Best Fiction of 2014! An Indie Next Pick!
From New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park and Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell, comes a hilarious, heart-wrenching take on love, marriage, and magic phones.

Georgie McCool knows her marriage is in trouble. That it’s been in trouble for a long time. She still loves her husband, Neal, and Neal still loves her, deeply—but that almost seems beside the point now.
Maybe that was always beside the point.
Two days before they’re supposed to visit Neal’s family in Omaha for Christmas, Georgie tells Neal that she can’t go. She’s a TV writer, and something’s come up on her show; she has to stay in Los Angeles. She knows that Neal will be upset with her—Neal is always a little upset with Georgie—but she doesn’t expect to him to pack up the kids and go without her.
When her husband and the kids leave for the airport, Georgie wonders if she’s finally done it. If she’s ruined everything.
That night, Georgie discovers a way to communicate with Neal in the past. It’s not time travel, not exactly, but she feels like she’s been given an opportunity to fix her marriage before it starts. . . .
Is that what she’s supposed to do?
Or would Georgie and Neal be better off if their marriage never happened?

THE GREATEST GIFT

THE GREATEST GIFT

A ROMANCE THAT I ACTUALLY LIKED!  WELL, IT WASN’T ALL ABOUT THE ROMANCE AND THE WEDDING AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.  SETH AND TRISTA BOTH HAVE COMPLICATED PASTS, THE PRESENT PRESENTS VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEMS, BUT THE FUTURE BEGINS TO LOOK BRIGHTER.

I ALSO READ LOSING FAITH (THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SETH AND TRISTA SERIES) A FEW YEARS BACK AND REALLY ENJOYED THAT.

PUBLISHER’S SYNOPSIS:

Never has Seth Storm’s life been this complete. His daughter, Faith, is now safely in his custody and care. And his career as a famous country musician is finally back on track. The only thing left for him to do is marry Trista Tilman, the woman who has stood by his side during the darkest moments of his life. After a beautiful lakeside proposal, Seth believes that his life is whole. That is, until he receives a call that threatens to destroy the foundation he has worked so hard to build.

Trista hasn’t always been lucky in love, but after meeting Seth, she knows he’s the right man for her and her daughter, Savannah. Strong and talented, he loves her the way she hasn’t been loved in a very long time. During a time when she had no one, he stepped in and helped her get back on her feet. And when he gets down on one knee, she knows that her life will never be the same. Little does she know that their largest battle has yet to come.

Nothing can prepare a parent for the journey Seth and Trista are about to embark upon as they face a road with unpredictable twists that will test them in ways they have never been tested, causing them to do things they never thought they would do.

The Greatest Gift is an emotional story about two people who believe they’ve finally found the peace they’ve been searching for only to discover that life has other plans for them.

The Greatest Gift is the second book in the Seth & Trista series, following Losing Faith and preceding The Final Encore. The Greatest Gift is Asher’s sixth novel. He is also the author of Insignificant Moments, Across the Creek, Beneath the Willow, and Close to Home.
